Do you take communion once a month? Once a week? Maybe you should be taking it every day. And do you use unleavened bread? Matzo? Italian loaf? Real wine or just bless your Welches 100% grape juice? Does it matter?
What about French Fries and Dr. Pepper?
The thought occurred to me one time while preparing a lesson for kids on what communion means. You have to admit, it can be pretty confusing. Catholics believe it to be literal, that people are actually eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Christ through a miraculous act of transfiguration during digestion. That’s weird. A little to close to virtual cannibalism. For some faith groups, it’s a crucial part of their religious practices, and for others, just something that is done from time to time to remind them of Christ’s sacrifice. But when studying Luke 22 with fresh eyes, something came drastically clear to me. I don’t think Jesus was saying “Eat THIS dinner often to remember me”. I think he was saying “Remember me EVERY time you eat.”
If you consider that bread and wine were the staples of dietary nutrition of the day, then it could be comparable to early settlers beer and potatoes or modern day drive through cuisine. Maybe it wasn’t the materials that matter. Maybe Jesus was simply trying to say that we need food to survive, and in the same way we should remember that our survival is based on his sacrifice, our fulfillment on his blood.
I don’t know if it’s theologically sound based on Greek translation of the verses in question, but it sure makes a lot more sense to me when I look at it that way. It’s great to celebrate communion in a traditional church setting, but more often, it should be taken at home, in your “upper room”. Maybe you are like me and have had a fairly sheltered life. I lived for a long long time before ever experiencing hunger. And spiritually, I have gone through long periods for self afflicted starvation. Maybe if I related my physical hunger to my spiritual needs better, I would be a better follower of Christ.
