One of my favorite holiday pies. I’m not sure why it’s become a holiday tradition. It’s super easy to make and doesn’t require a lot of special ingredients. I have researched some recipe’s online and tried one. It was good, but when compared to the old family recipe, and I may be bias here, it just didn’t hold up.

This is the recipe as sent to me by my mom. Different then the first one I tried, and much better in my opinion.

1 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1 stick butter
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
pastry shell

separate eggs. beat egg whites until stiff. set aside. beat egg yolks. add sugar, flour, buttermilk, butter, and vanilla. mix well. stir in egg whites. pour in unbaked pie shell. bake 15 minutes at 425 reduce heat to 350 and bake 30 minutes longer.
