This dish is talked about a lot by all those English cooks as a core English traditional meal. I would compare it to an American’s hamburger helper, just with better ingredients. First of all, it’s not really a pie, so that dashed some of the kid’s hopes and expectations. But on the bright side, it was a lot simpler to through together then a kidney or meat pie that requires a crust. Another positive note is that most kids like mash potatoes and this is a good way to hide some healthy hearty veggies into a meat based potato covered dish. You can use all kinds of veggies for the base and be a little creative, but the core elements of shepherd’s pie is lamb meat and mashed potatoes. You simply fry up all your meat and veggies to a nice tender consistency and then toss them into a dish and cover with the mash. Bake it for a time to let the flavors meld and give the top of the mash a crisp texture. On the whole, either I’m not doing something write or it’s just not a big winner, but most of us would rather eat this as a plate of meat, mash, and veggie as opposed to the pie format. But I have done this before with beef, and although doable, it really isn’t the same dish.
