Our kids will eat beans, but they are not always fans of everything being in “soup” form, so with 15 bean soup, I actually drain out the water and add a little seasoning right before serving. For a fun kick I shaped the rice and beans in a ying/yang symbol and told the kids it was a kung fu panda dish (kung fu panda 2 had just came out). Other then the rice, you can just follow the directions that come with a traditional package of 15 bean soup. I don’t use the included “ham flavoring packet”, but instead just toss in ham chunks with the beans before cooking. I found a new item in the store that was just bad cuts of ham, like what is wasted when they make the perfectly shaped hams. I don’t know if they always carry it, but it’s great for dishes like these.
